Finding that first job, Sophie Hanson has made it!

Making the transition from being a student to a fully fledged graduate, and worse, job hunter, is scary and uncertain. I’m unsure whether anything can prepare you for the difficult realisation when you have your first, second, third, tenth, eleventh and twelfth job applications are rejected. However, it does get better.  Continue reading

Graduation, so different when it’s your own!

Dan Derricott graduated this year but as he tells us here, time spent watching other people graduate never fully prepares you!

I had spent months thinking about and planning my Graduation. I could do this with relative ease because I knew what to expect. I have been to probably close to 10 graduation ceremonies all in all before my own.

As a students’ union officer you get invited and it was always great to go and help celebrate (and the free food & wine made it even better). Sitting on the stage is fun too, though with the fear of a camera being pointed in your direction you have no choice but to be sat upright, smiling and clapping most enthusiastically even after 230th time.

From that side you also get chance to mill about in the VIP reception too which is particularly good when there’s a well-known person receiving an honorary doctorate that day and you get a few minutes to chat.

Dan and his Mum, shame we can’t see the new shoes!

Another year goes by….

It is now time for the class of 2012 to start filling the pages of this Alumni Blog. Graduation, as ever, the first week in September and this year the weather was glorious – warm and sunny with just a light breeze to make those caps fly!

We now have two prizes for the graduates who excel in their studies. The Chartered Institute of Public Relations Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Group continue to support us with a n award for the PR student of the year. This year the winner was Sophie Hanson who received a cheque and medal; Sophie had also been shortlisted for the Midland CIPR student of the year with her final year project on the fashion industry and PETA. Can you keep a secret? Lauren Aitken has proved she can….

I felt as if I was Britain’s biggest cynic when it came to the Olympic Opening Ceremony. I was ready to tune in and watch through my fingers as Danny Boyle portrayed Britain in a way that gave us cause to laugh at ourselves once again, whilst the rest of the world looked on bemused and unimpressed.

to the right of her sister is Lauren Aitken on her way to the world’s best kept secret

I knew that London would produce the least spectacular Ceremony yet. Whilst Bejing were more than happy to beat their chest and astound the world with their display of strength and power, London would be ‘oh-so-careful’ not to offend anyone or anything and show ourselves as everyone’s best friend. It wouldn’t be cool it would be cheesy and we would all be left red faced and cringing, wondering how they could get it so wrong and feeling unfairly represented as a nation.

I was certain that I would be able to come up with a superior spectacle within five minutes of the lighting of the cauldron.

Therefore; when my sister announced that she had been awarded tickets to the Opening Ceremony Rehearsals I found it comforting. I felt that if I could preview the thing then I would be better prepared for the embarrassment of the Friday broadcast. Continue reading
